The Harry Redknapp Situation - The HR perspective

Harry Redknapp was sacked today for the Premier League football Club, Tottenham Hotspur. Despite being the most successful manager in decades, the chairman decided he would not offer Redknapp a contract extension beyond the next 12 months.

Redknapp argued that he needed a contract extension to encourage his players to stay at the club. However, when the England manager's job became available earlier in the year, it was thought Redknapp would certainly be offered the job. Amidst all the speculation the Spurs team threw away a 13 point lead over their bitter rivals Arsenal and missed out in Champions League qualification. Redknapp recently admitted he would have taken the England job if it had been offered. This seems to be the deciding factor in Redknapp's dismissal.

Do you think the Spurs chairman made the right decision?

Should employees be more careful when looking at new job opportunities?

Is it fair for employers to punish staff for considering taking another job?
